MUKKULANKATU 19, LAHTI - LUJA -GALLERIA | MAY 2026

"you move

you love

you breathe

and slightly disappear"

Creative side:

ABOUT THE SUBJECT AND BACKGROUND

Movement is never permanent; it is impossible to replicate any movement exactly as it occurred before. Every instance of movement is unique.

I wanted to capture and document movement as it is—raw, unique, and emotional.

At the same time, I was able to fulfill a long-held dream of photographing ballet and figure skating.

I chose ballet and figure skating as subjects partly because questions regarding the ethics and toxicity within these disciplines occasionally surface. Had I possessed more time and resources, I would have gladly explored other similar sports and the movement inherent to them. Both of these disciplines are simultaneously incredibly beautiful and incredibly raw.

Young children are expected to undergo rigorous training,

demanded to exercise impossible self-discipline, and subjected to unhealthy rules.

Yet, at the same time, these disciplines are so aesthetically

beautiful that we admire those who practice them, and many

young people aspire to turn these pursuits into their

professions.

DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

The images in the work were shot using a Canon R6 with 24–70mm and 50mm lenses.

The shooting locations were the Herttoniemi ice rink and the photography studio at the Lahti Institute of Design.

The original intention was to photograph a skater, a ballet dancer, a jazz dancer, and a runner, but due to scheduling reasons and to keep the project focused, I ultimately ended up photographing the first two.

For the ballet photos shot in the studio, three Profoto lights were used. These included a main light coming from above and slightly to the side, a hair light from behind, and a snoot from the side acting as a spotlight. Additionally, a negative fill was placed on one side.
